Why do you need a purebred dog? Unless you are going to be involved in dog shows and things of that nature it’s really not necessary. Your lab mix will be just as good a companion as your pure lab. After all, the main reason we love animals is for their unconditional love and friendship. All the cosmetic attributes in the world can’t compete with that. Why go broke buying a “brand name” dog or cat? Why contribute to the homeless pet population by supporting a breeder? Why not save a life and make room for one more? Pets are living creatures, not accessories that you order by checking off the features you want. There is no guarantee that the animals will grow into the size or character you want anyway. I could never turn away a sweet face no matter what he/she looked like or where he/she came from. In the end it just doesn’t matter.
Did you know that 25% of the animals in shelters today are purebred? They get euthanized too…it happens all over this country. Did you know there are breed specific rescue groups all over the country that take in dogs from high kill shelters and other bad situations to find them new homes? Google your favorite breed and look for rescue groups in your region. They are everywhere! Why not save a life that already exists rather than facilitate a breeder who is only making matters worse for animals?
Next time you or someone you know thinks they have to have a purebred dog or cat ask yourself what is more important. Saving a life and being a part of the solution, or condoning, facilitating, and contributing to the number of pets that die every year in shelters simply for being homeless because they wanted the “label” or fashion statement of having a purebred? I choose saving a life every time with no hesitation!
Myth…”the dogs/cats breeders are selling need homes too.” No, they have a home with the person or people that choose to create them. If you buy they will supply …over and over again! YOU have to end the vicious cycle by NOT buying from them. They won’t be able to sell them and make their money, which will eliminate their motivation to breed.
Once you have truly made a connection with an animal and experienced unconditional love from them, you would never again go about choosing a pet in a superficial manner. Because animals are the only beings on earth that are pure of heart we have to protect them. They do not understand the negative aspects of this world that humans have created. They don’t care what they look like and they don’t care what you look like. They just want us to understand them and love them. Hence the saying “Don’t Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die”
